HOBOKEN, NJ — Konstantinos Babalis, the head of the family that owns the popular Malibu Diner at Hoboken's north entrance, died on May 16 at age 80. Friends left flowers in front of the diner last week.

Babalis took over the 24-hour eatery, which serves everything from homemade pies to seafood, in 1979. His children Nicholas and Katerina presently own it.

Recently, the family sought permission for developers to build a five-story apartment building on the land. The diner would be reinstalled on the ground floor.

But for now, the diner going strong. It currently offers curbside pickup and delivery, an employee said Wednesday. Delivery is by calling or using UberEats. To confirm the current status, check Instagram or call the diner at 201-656-1595.

On a Facebook page, the diner posted a news story about Babalis's passing. Fans commented:"So very sorry for your family's loss. I have known you all and your Dad since I was a little girl. Deepest condolences, may he Rest In Peace." And "Great man beautiful family."

Babalis is survived by wife Georgia, daughter Katerina Sciglitano, son Nicholas, brother Dimitrios, and four grandchildren: Georgina, Konstantinos, Alexander, and Giuseppe.

"Hoboken will always remember Konstantinos and his contributions to our mile square," said Mayor Ravi Bhalla in a story in NJ.com last week. "The Malibu Diner is a shining example of a family-owned business that has served our community for decades, thanks in large part to his hard work and dedication."
