Environmental benefits of the rooftop include improved roof longevity and thermal insulation, port officials claim.

Officials at the Port of New York and New Jersey shared an eye-catching photo of a green roof atop the Holland Tunnel’s administration building, showing the differences in temperature caused by the growing vegetation.

The roof was installed as part of the port’s “Greening the Holland Tunnel Initiative,” launched in 2013.

According to a release, the project was the first such roof installed on Port Authority property, and will serve as a pilot program aimed at providing both operational and environmental benefits, such as improved roof longevity, thermal insulation, greenhouse gas and air pollution reductions and storm water-runoff reductions.
