A Plan For Pier 12 In Hoboken: Shipyard Marina Expands Social Club

HOBOKEN, NJ — While the Pier 13 bar in Hoboken may draw a crowd for its food, drinks and music, the pier just south of it — Pier 12 — is hosting social gatherings and activities of a different nature.

That pier, part of the Shipyard Marina, is used by the Hoboken Sailing Club for ongoing classes for local schools and private students. And recently, Max Reo, the director of the Club, has been offering "social memberships" for those who may not have a boat in the marina, but want to enjoy various sailing activities or relax in a quiet setting on the pier.

Those seeking a spot to gather by the water, or to take advantage of activities and events, can apply for a social membership.

Marina officials have also been renovating the pier and adding furnishings, lighting, and artwork.

Yasmin Coto, the project manager and director for Pier 12 for the Shipyard Marina, has been revamping the space since 2022.

She said, "The redesign of Pier 12 has focused on creating a welcoming space where members and visitors can gather, relax, and enjoy the waterfront throughout the day. We’ve continued to enhance the space with new furniture, shade canopies, and an environment that make Pier 12 a destination of its own."

Sailing Club members, including social members, can access several benefits: monthly activities, clinics, 50 percent off sailing lessons, boat trips, access to a fleet of J/80 sailboats, and a space to unwind.

Both family and individual memberships are available.

While Pier 12 is now gearing up for next season, they're still accepting memberships for the rest of the current season that ends on Nov. 1.

“Whether you are a seasoned captain or stepping onto a boat for the first time," Reo said, "the Hoboken Sailing Club offers continuing education in our classroom on Pier 12 and out on the Hudson River, unlimited access to our fleet of J/80 sailboats, and a vibrant community with lively social events.”

Boats Charters And Jet Skis

Club members and members of the public can also access other ventures, including Hoboken Boat Charters, Resilience Adventures, and NYC Jet Ski.

In autumn, boats can be chartered for fall foliage tours, family outings, groups of friends, and fishing trips.

Shipyard Development

The Shipyard Development, including the piers, Marina, and hundreds of luxury condos with waterfront views, received its city approvals 30 years ago, and has been evolving since. The development, located on upper Hudson Street, also contains the Hoboken Historic Museum and several areas of open space for the public.

“The Shipyard Marina is deeply meaningful to me," said Joe Barry, the president of the marina. "I’ve watched this waterfront evolve from its industrial roots into a destination that’s bringing people back to the river and onto the water. Thirty-five years ago, I acquired this property, and now a revival is taking place."
