Protesters gather at Pearson Education offices in Hoboken
Parents and activists blast $83 million state tax break for testing giant.
On Wednesday afternoon, a gathering of around 25 protesters, parents and children convened at the Hoboken office of U.K.-based corporation Pearson Education – the developer of the controversial PARCC student assessment tests - to protest a recent tax break given to the multi-national testing corporation. Activists claimed that the NJ Economic Development Authority gave an $83 million tax break to Pearson for moving 628 employees from Bergen County to Hudson County, which they described as a reward for “shuffling jobs from Upper Saddle River to Hoboken at cost to school funding, property tax relief and other essential investments.”
The protest was organized by Better Choices for New Jersey, a statewide campaign to promote public investments that benefit New Jersey’s middle and working class, and was convened by NJ Working Families.
