Scammers Con Hoboken Victim Out Of Gold Chain

HOBOKEN, NJ — A victim was scammed out of their gold necklace in Hoboken this month, and police are warning the public to be aware of the scheme — and asking for tips.

Police said that on Aug. 12, a woman in an SUV pulled up to the victim on the 100 block of Madison Street and asked for directions.

The victim gave directions, and the woman placed what appeared to be a gold chain around the victim's neck as a thank-you, police said.

"After the car drove away, the victim realized their genuine chain had been removed and replaced with a fake," police say.

Police referred to the scam as a "distraction crime."

"Never allow strangers to get into your personal space or place jewelry or other items on your body," police advised. "Be cautious of unsolicited requests or 'gifts' from strangers."

People around North Jersey have been victimized by versions of the scam.

As reported on Patch a year ago, an "elderly" woman was walking in Glen Rock when she was approached by a woman in a vehicle who said she reminded her of her dead mother.

The suspect also told the victim it was her mother's birthday, police said at the time. The scammer then hugged the victim and placed two necklaces, a bracelet, and two rings on her, police say.

As she did so, she removed a gold necklace and bangle bracelet from the victim, police say. The necklace was worth more than $500, the victim told police.

Police released the photos (above and below) of a vehicle suspected in the scam.
