Snow In Hoboken: Street Cleaning Suspended; Schools Superintendent Gives Detailed Message

HOBOKEN, NJ — With snow on the ground Tuesday morning in Hoboken, the city said street cleaning will be suspended for the day.

Another few inches of snow are predicted Friday.

Roads in Hoboken were wet but clear on Tuesday morning.

Schools: 'I Will Be Monitoring The Weather'

Hoboken Superintendent of Schools Christine Johnson said in a detailed message to parents that as of Monday night, schools will open on time, but that the decision could change (see link below for updates).

"I will be monitoring the weather all evening and very early in the morning," she wrote. "If something changes overnight and a delayed opening or a closure is needed, all staff and families will be notified between 6 AM and 6:15 AM with an email and a robocall. We will post it on social media as well. I always recommend that families make contingency plans for child care in the event that we do need to delay or close just to be on the safe side. Remember to always check our website at www.hoboken.k12.nj.us for up to date information on the status of our schools."

Next door in Jersey City, the district announced in a message to parents that the district will be closed Tuesday, but maintenance staff must report.

The latest prediction after 8 p.m. Monday was that the city would get as much as 3 inches of snow from 9 p.m. until around 7 a.m., when it changes to a "wintry mix."

"Snow covered roads and visibility down to ½ mile at times Tonight into Tue PM," the NWS said in its latest powerpoint presentation. "Hazardous travel likely thru Tue Eve."

Guidance From City Of Hoboken

Here is the city of Hoboken's briefing from Monday evening:

The National Weather Service's winter weather advisory is in effect for Hoboken and the surrounding area tonight, Jan. 15, until 1 p.m. tomorrow, Jan. 16. Mixed precipitation with a total snowfall accumulation of 3 to 4 inches is predicted.

Residents are encouraged to limit travel if possible during the storm and to exercise caution while driving as low temperatures could lead to icy conditions.

Street Cleaning Suspended & Pantry Distribution Postponed

Street cleaning on Tuesday, Jan. 16, has been suspended. All other parking regulations will remain in effect.

Emergency snow routes are not anticipated to be in effect during the storm.

The Hoboken Community Center’s Jan. 16 Personal Care Pantry (Hygiene program) distribution has been postponed. The distribution has been rescheduled for next Wednesday, Jan. 24, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Hoboken Community Center, 1301 Washington St.

Keep Sidewalks & Curb Ramps Clear

While the City’s Department of Parks, Recreation, & Public Works will salt and plow streets, if necessary, property owners and occupants are reminded that they have 6 hours after the completion of a storm to remove snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to their property, along with adjoining curb ramps or curb cuts.

Residents are urged to assist elderly or disabled neighbors with clearing snow from their properties.

It is illegal to shovel snow back onto streets or onto fire hydrants.

The City performs proactive inspections and relies on citizen complaints to help identify property owners that are not meeting sidewalk safety requirements. While the majority of property owners comply with the safety regulations, the City will issue fines to those who do not keep sidewalks clear.
