UPDATED: Statue of Liberty Evacuated Due to Bomb Scare
WATCH: Area declared safe after authorities investigate a report of explosives at the iconic national monument.

A bomb scare at the Statue of Liberty prompted authorities to order an evacuation of the iconic national monument on Friday.
According to a statement from the National Park Service, authorities received a 911 call around 11 a.m. from a person threatening to “blow up the Statue of Liberty.”
When federal investigators with canine units responded to the scene, the dogs found an “area of interest” near the statue’s base.

A police bomb squad was then called to the scene, and after visitors in the area were evacuated, a security sweep of Liberty Island was conducted.
According to New York Police Department spokesman Steve David, police found nothing harmful during the search.

Social media posts and photos from people on the scene show emergency responders conducting an orderly evacuation of the national monument, leading them onto waiting ferry boats.
