Taylor Ham/Pork Roll Sandwich Made With Donuts? Hoboken Entrepreneur Sparks Debate

Among them: Is that Taylor ham?

It's a donut! It's a sandwich! It's both a donut and a sandwich.

HOBOKEN, NJ — The one-woman baking pop-up Do Good Donuts has gained a following in Hoboken and Jersey City, with entrepreneur Emily Wirt serving up unique varieties from scratch and delivering by bike.

But would you expect a donut to become part of one of New Jersey's most iconic sandwiches — pork roll with egg and cheese? (Or do you prefer to call it by the brand name Taylor ham?)

When Wirt posted a photo of the sandwich on social media last week, customers kvelled, with one saying "Yummy for my tummy." But others predictably fought over whether the meat should be called Taylor ham or pork roll. (Didn't Mick Jagger weigh in recently?)

And someone called the concoction "gross." That person was met with a cheerful: "I hope when you run your own business, people come and give unsolicited advice to you too."

Meanwhile, Do Good continues to offer unique donuts via popup and preorder, with varieties ranging from brown butter glazed to PB&J to Thin Mint.

"I take pride in so much about Do Good Donuts. I am a one-woman show without a car," Emily wrote last yera. "I am self-taught, too. I weigh and hand roll every donut by hand. (Friends have helped me do this and can attest 😤) I waste zero dough this way and never have to reroll, which would lead to a tougher donut."
