Affordable Housing Development Back On Holmdel Agenda

The 50-unit affordable housing complex proposal in Holmdel will return to the planning board on Tuesday.

HOLMDEL, NJ — A 50-unit affordable housing project in Holmdel is back on the planning board's agenda after being on hold for nearly a year and a half.

The project, dubbed Holmdel Family Apartments, set be developed near South Laurel Avenue and Middle Road by The Walters Group of Haddonfield and will be entirely made up of affordable housing units.

The application for project approval was halted after neighboring Hazlet sued Holmdel three times to stop the development's construction. Hazlet Mayor Mike Glackin and attorney James Gorman claimed at a Holmdel Township Committee meeting on July 28 that the 50-unit complex is too close to residential property on Hazlet's Marsand Drive and only feet from the township border.

Last year, a settlement agreement was reached with Hazlet Township, which included obligations such as maintaining a 100-foot buffer between the proposed development and existing buildings and replacing a storm drain.

According to the settlement, Hazlet would be in charge of stormwater improvements, while Holmdel would be in charge of landscaping.

The new plan calls for the construction of three three-story buildings, as well as site improvements such as recreational facilities, on-site parking, landscaping, lighting and utilities. Other revisions to the proposal include relocating the project further away from the Hazlet boundary and eliminating a proposed driveway that would have gone onto South Laurel Avenue.

The Planning Board will meet on Tuesday, May 3, at 7 p.m. in the courtroom of Town Hall, 4 Crawfords Corner Road, Holmdel.
