Hazlet Firefighter Launches Donation Drive For Venezuela Earthquake Relief

HAZLET, NJ — A local firefighter has organized a relief donation drive for those affected by the recent earthquakes in Venezuela.

As of Tuesday afternoon, over 1,700 people have died since the earthquakes devastated Venezuela last week.

The tremors have affected at least 22,619 people, CNN reported, including over 5,000 who were injured. Of the (at least) 855 buildings damaged, 189 collapsed completely.

In an online post, Hazlet Fire Company Firefighter Gabe Amato shared his desire to help those affected by the earthquakes.

Through his drive, the fire company will be collecting essential supplies to bring to a shipping/relief center supporting upcoming shipments to Venezuela.

"As many of you know, I am originally from Venezuela," Amato said. "After the recent earthquakes, I want to do whatever I can from here in New Jersey to support the families and communities affected."

"I will be collecting donations over the next few days," he continued. "The first drop-off will be delivered [Tuesday] night, and we will continue collecting for the next shipment for the following weekend."

The fire company will be collecting new, sealed and unexpired items only, such as:

• First-aid supplies
• Gauze, bandages, and medical tape
• Nitrile gloves and masks
• Antiseptic wipes and saline wound wash
• OTC / over-the-counter medicines, new, sealed, and unexpired only:
  • Acetaminophen/Tylenol
  • Ibuprofen
  • Allergy Medicine
  • Cough/Cold Medicine
  • Antibiotic Ointment
• Baby formula, diapers, and baby wipes
• Feminine hygiene products
• Toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, and personal hygiene items
• Non-perishable foods:
  • Canned goods
  • Rice
  • Pasta
  • Oats
  • Lentils
  • Beans
  • Protein bars
  • Powdered milk
• Sturdy boxes and packing tape

Residents are asked to NOT donate clothing, shoes, water, opened items, expired items, prescription medications, homemade food, or glass containers.

Items can be dropped off at Hazlet Fire Company No. 1, located at 570 Holmdel Road, Hazlet.

Those dropping off a donation can call or text 332-254-3360.

"Every donation counts and can make a real difference for a Venezuelan family during this difficult time," Amato said.
