HOLMDEL, NJ —While the frightening trend of car thefts or attempted car thefts continues in Monmouth County, Holmdel police said that on Wednesday there were "several" attempted car burglaries and an attempted car theft in the town.

Meanwhile, at Tuesday's Township Committee meeting, Deputy Mayor Prakash Santhana reported to the committee a summary of theft incidents: Sixteen attempted car thefts, five actual thefts and three incidents where persons entered homes through open garage doors hoping to find key fobs.

He urged residents to lock not only their vehicles but to lock their homes, take their key fobs and lock garage doors.

He said towns throughout the state are seeing increased car thefts, so it's not unique to Holmdel. "But it doesn't sound like Holmdel" anymore, he observed.

At 5:13 a.m. officers responded to the area of Everett and Stilwell Roads to assist the Middletown Police Department, which just had an attempted burglary in the area, police said in a statement on the township website.

While searching the area, Holmdel officers were passed by a white BMW operating at 115 miles per hour, police said. Holmdel officers attempted to locate the vehicle but due to the high rate of speed were unable to stop it.

While searching the area, police were notified that there were "several" attempted car burglaries and one attempted home burglary in the Blue Hills/Bordeaux area.

Security footage in that area showed that subjects attempted to steal a vehicle but were unsuccessful because the car was locked. The persons then attempted to enter a nearby residence but were unsuccessful because the home was locked.

If anyone has any surveillance footage showing either the suspects or vehicle they were operating, contact Det. Kret at 732-946-9690 ext. 1713, police said.

The police urged residents to immediately report any suspicious activity.

Like Santhana, they reiterated advice to "lock your cars, take the keys inside, and lock all the doors leading into your home including the garage."
