Garden Volunteers Beautify Holmdel's 911 Memorial

Have you stopped by our beautiful 911 Memorial lately? Located on Crawford Corner Road on the circle in front of the Holmdel Municipal Complex, it is sure to bring your heart to a place of remembrance and reflect on the residents and family members we lost on that tragic day. 

The Memorial is maintained 100% by volunteers. Our group is small, and I always reach out to residents of Holmdel at this time of year who have a passion for gardening to come and join us. Last Fall we planted many new plants and added tons of good compost under the guidance of Marcia St. John from Marcia's Country Gardens in Brick, who is a Master Gardener and our advisor.  The perimeter is adorned with boxwoods, Russian sage, Shasta daisies, knockout roses, spiraea, day lilies and liriope. This year we have taken on the additional maintenance of the area around the main flagpoles. Ambitious!!!!!!!

We are off to a good start this year. The new plants were purchased with money we collected from the sale of T-Shirts at last year's Memorial Service and some individual donations. This year I have received some additional donations from the families who lost a loved one, and I'm always grateful when I get a surprise check in the mail from someone. Let us never forget not only those we lost, but this beautiful piece of Holmdel history that will forever live on as a tribute to our residents, not only a tribute to those who perished, but those who gave their lives trying to save others.
