HOLMDEL, NJ — The Monmouth County Engineering Division recently updated the Holmdel Township that infrastructure updates have been approved for the transit over-pass on Laurel Avenue, according to an official statement.

Laurel Avenue is a heavy traffic road that directly connects the Garden State Parkway and Route 35. The proposed solution is an upgraded sign for the low-overhead transit over-pass, which will hopefully alert trucks so they can turn around and avoid the bridge.

The Holmdel Police Department has been working alongside Monmouth County Engineering to find a way to alleviate collisions with the bridge. The hope is to lessen the amount of road closures, traffic delays, and unnecessary burdens on Township infrastructure.

According to an official report, Holmdel police have responded to:

  • 2021: 5 Crashes and 22 Assists
  • 2020: 3 Crashes and 15 Assists
  • 2019: 4 Crashes and 22 Assists
  • 2018: 7 Crashes and 20 Assists
  • 2017: 2 Crashes and 17 Assists

"The new improvements are considered Phase 2 of a Three-Phase project. Phase 1 was the deployment of the temporary variable message boards. These were programmed with the flashing message warning of the low bridge, and immediately had a positive effect. The final, and permanent, Phase 3 is still under consideration," said patrolman Matthew Menosky.

The updated sign will be equipt with flashing beacons over the roadway on each approach and replace the current temporary message boards.
