HOLMDEL, NJ — As the spring season begins, there are plenty of outdoor events on the horizon for Holmdel residents.

Each year, the Friends of Holmdel Open Space (FOHOS) sponsors trail walks/hikes so that residents can become better acquainted with Holmdel's parks and trails.

These walks are co-led by long-time FOHOS Trustees Ralph Blumenthal (former president of the Board of Education and chairman of the Holmdel Planning Board, now an Environmental Commissioner), Larry Fink (former Mayor and Holmdel Environmental Commission chairman), and Janet Jackel (President of FOHOS and an Environmental Commissioner).

Additional walks and a fossil hunt may be scheduled later in the year, officials said.

All FOHOS walks are free, open to the public, and “Show and Go” — there’s no need to register. Severe weather may result in a cancellation.

The pace for walks will be moderate, and most walks last just a few hours. All are welcome to attend, including couples, singles, families, seniors and dogs on leashes.

Some of the upcoming events planned for the 2026 spring season include:

Daffodil Walk

  • Date: Saturday, April 4 (1-3 p.m.)
  • Location: Bayonet Farm (41 Middletown Road, Holmdel)
  • Details: Meet at 1 p.m. at Bayonet Farm at the parking lot adjacent to the Harding House for this about 2.5-mile walk to see a host of golden daffodils. First, visit the Daffodil Memorial Beds planted by volunteers. Then, wander into the Ramanessin Section of Holmdel Park and see other early wildflowers (trout lilies, spring beauties, violets…) and the extensive daffodils planted over 60 years ago in the forest along the brook’s edge by Laura Harding. Some sections of the trail may be muddy, and it wanders up and down over some of the hills of Holmdel. Return to Bayonet Farm.

26th Annual Holmdel Greenway Walk & Bayonet Farm Festival

  • Date: Sunday, April 26 (12-5 p.m.)
  • Location: Bayonet Farm (41 Middletown Road, Holmdel)
    • Festival: As in past years, there will be a variety of activities and presentations planned for young and old alike, including nature crafts, music, refreshments, and sales of homemade baked goods. Many local community groups will be present, offering useful and important information on recycling, composting, backyard gardening, conservation and tours of the Harding House.
    • Earth Day Greenway Walk: Start the Earth Day Celebration with this walk through some of the trails on Bayonet Farm and the Ramanessin Section of Holmdel Park for about 1.5-2 miles, beginning at 11 a.m. Park in the main festival parking area (grass field) on the left side of the Bayonet Farm entrance driveway. Then walk up to the Harding House porch for the start. Suitable for walkers of all ages, the hike will be a loop ending at Bayonet Farm, where the festival will have started.
