Donald “Doc” George Johansen, 69, of Holmdel Has Died

He was an active volunteer for the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans' Memorial Foundation in Holmdel.

Donald “Doc” George Johansen, 69, of Holmdel, NJ passed away with wife and daughter by his side on September 27, 2012 at Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank, NJ. Don was born on July 11, 1943 in Brooklyn, NY and resided in Holmdel, NJ since 1986. 

Don was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army serving with the 1st Calvary Division as a combat medic during the Vietnam War in 1965-1966 whereby he was awarded the Purple Heart during his service. He was an active volunteer for the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial Foundation in Holmdel, NJ often holding lectures (at schools) and educating students about the Vietnam War. Don was a member and advocate of LZ-Hope based at East Orange and Lyons VA Hospitals.

Mr. Johansen was a bond trader for Paine Webber and Company in NY, where he held the position of Vice President before his retirement in 1989. Characterized by his handlebar mustache, Don was an avid NY Jets fan, loved to golf and spend time with family and friends.

Don was predeceased by his parents, George and Mary (Coleman)Johansen. He is survived by his beloved and devoted wife, Eileen; his loving daughter, Jennifer, and her fiancé Chris; his dear brother and sisters, George Johansen and his wife Gail of Greenwood Village, CO; Arlene Cummings and her husband Eugene of Pine Bush, NY; Mariann Hartmann and her husband Lou of Red Bank, NJ, along with many beloved nieces, nephews, friends and his cherished dog, Oliver.

A devoted husband, father, and uncle, Don was never one to back down, living his life to the fullest with unwavering strength and the will to fight and succeed when faced with adversity. He will be sadly missed, but never forgotten as his journey has not ended here.

Family and friends are invited to visit on Sunday, September 30, 2012 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 PM and Monday morning, October 1, 2012 from 9:45 to 10:30 AM at the Shore Point Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 3269 State Route 35 North, Hazlet, New Jersey 07730.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday, October 1, 2012 at St. Benedict Roman Catholic Church, 165 Bethany Road, Holmdel, New Jersey, 07733, at 11:00 AM. Entombment will follow at Holmdel Cemetery in Holmdel, New Jersey. In Lieu of flowers please make donations to Disabled America Veterans or National Kidney Foundation.
