The Holmdel girls varsity soccer team remains unbeaten with a 9-0 (7-0) record. Tonight they posted a strong 6-0 win over Matawan and have solid command of first place in A Central division.
Holmdel had a 2-0 lead at half time. Rebecca Stanziale scored the Holmdel first goal and assisted on the second goal by junior forward Hannah Lee. That was Lee’s 7th goal of the year and Stanziale’s third.

In the second half, Holmdel came out and simply dominated the play. Gabby Bair scored two goals, with assists by Catherine Cirigliano and Abbey Flynn. Bair now has 9 goals this season. Tonight the Hornets had two new faces develop into scoring threats: freshman Kailey Flynn, (assist by Hannah Lee), and junior Sara Cruz, (assist by Victoria Wuestneck), each added a goal, their first as varsity players.
Holmdel’s defense completely shut down any offensive opportunity the Huskies tried to develop. Junior Casey Matthijs anchors the Holmdel back four along with her sister, sophomore Maggie Matthijs, and freshman Abbey Flynn and Kathryn Rebele. Senior goalkeeper Helen Burleigh picked up her 5th shutout.

The Holmdel girls play Raritan at home on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
It was HYAA night at Holmdel High School as the first graders played during half time. Despite the falling rain, 6 teams made up of 50 boys had a great time having small exhibition games under the lights on the turf field.
Unfortunately, there is not better news to report from the boys varsity game as they lost to Matawan 3-1. Holmdel dominated the first half as they scored a quick goal in the first three minutes. Joshua Broten-Jones scored his first goal of the season for the Hornets. But Holmdel did not put the game away in the first half when they had the chance and Matawan roared back in the second half. The Huskies scored three second half goals and went on to defeat Holmdel. Matawan remains in first place in A Central with their win tonight.
Holmdel plays again on Friday at 3:30 pm at Raritan. I will be there. Hope to see you too.
