Hazlet Halloween, Mischief Night Curfew In Place Again This Year

The curfew has some important exceptions built in-- does one of them apply to you?

HAZLET, NJ-- Once again, Hazlet will have a curfew in place on Mischief Night and Halloween for anyone under eighteen.

On October 29, 30, and 31 all Hazlet residents under eighteen must be home between 8:00 PM and 6:00 AM, unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

The ordinance is wide reaching, saying that no one under 18 can be on "public streets, highways, alleys, parks or other public places in the Township of Hazlet, either on foot or in or upon any type of conveyance" without an adult.

Any minors out between those times without an adult will be subject to mandatory community service, and could be subjected to a fine up to $1,000.

There are some important exceptions to the rule: anyone going to or from, or at work, is excused from the provision. Schools and places of instruction, any functions "sponsored by a religious, school, civic or other properly supervised event or program," and any other supervised social meetings are also exempt from the rule.

So what does that mean? Teenagers hanging out on the streets sans adults could be punished, but teenagers going to work or extracurriculars won't be.
