Hazlet Lidl Opens Nov. 28, Old Bridge Aldi Opens Oct. 11

The Old Bridge Aldi will open tomorrow, Oct. 11, and an opening date for the long-anticipated Hazlet Lidl has now finally been announced.

OLD BRIDGE, NJ — It's the opening of the rival discount European supermarket chains! The Old Bridge Aldi will open tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 11 and an opening date for the long-anticipated Hazlet Lidl has now finally been announced as Nov. 28.

The Old Bridge Aldi is located at 1043 Rt. 9. It will open immediately after the ribbon-cutting ceremony at 8:45 a.m. on Thursday. There will be a Golden Ticket giveaway offering gift cards to the first 100 customers Thursday morning, where shoppers can enter a sweepstakes for a chance to win a year’s supply of Aldi produce.

Both European supermarket chains are in the midst of an aggressive expansion into the U.S. grocery store market.

Hazlet has been eagerly anticipating the opening of the Lidl for months now. The Nov. 28 opening date was first reported today by the Asbury Park Press. The Hazlet Lidl will open at the site of the old (beloved) Red Oak diner.

The already-existing Aldi in Hazlet is moving across Rt. 35 into a much larger space inside the long-closed Hazlet Pathmark. It will compete against Lidl as the two rival chains will be located on both the north and southbound sides of Rt. 35.

"I think Aldi wants to be on the southbound side of Rt. 35 before the light at Poole, as Lidl will be located on the northbound side of 35 after the light," former Hazlet Mayor Sue Kiley mused to Patch earlier this year.
