Hazlet Police Host 'Women Safety And Empowerment' Workshop

All high school juniors and seniors are welcome to participate in the two-day program.

HAZLET, NJ — The Hazlet Police Department is partnering with Bayshore Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and 180 Turning Lives Around to host "Smart Strong Safe," a program to educate young women on how they can protect themselves in dangerous situations.

The two-day event, which will take place on Apr. 1 and Apr. 3, is open to all Hazlet high school seniors and juniors, regardless of where they attend school. Parents are welcome to attend as well, police said.

The program opens with 180 presenting an educational piece on relationship violence, drug-assisted sexual assault, and other warning indicators of potentially dangerous situations that young people find themselves in—often without even recognizing it.

The second day of the program is led by instructors from Bayshore BJJ, who will teach important self-defense skills in a hands-on setting. Attendees will learn how to avoid, respond to, and flee a sexual predator. For the hands-on day at the Jiu Jitsu gym, it is recommended to wear comfortable gym gear.
