Hazlet PD Issues Guidance On Package Theft Prevention

Amid an anticipated increase in package deliveries from Cyber Monday and the coming holidays, the department issued tips on 'porch pirates'.

HAZLET, NJ - Amid an anticipated increase in package deliveries from Cyber Monday and the coming holidays, the Hazlet Township Police Department recently issued tips on ‘porch pirate’ prevention.

“Now that the weekend of shopping has come to a close, we are sure everyone is anxiously awaiting the arrival of their online orders,” the department wrote Wednesday. “Especially since Cyber Monday just passed and certain companies promise two day shipping. While it's awesome to get your packages quickly, packages that are left outside for a long period of time are at risk of being plundered by porch pirates.”

According to Hazlet police, below are a few ways you can avoid front porch package theft:

  • Schedule deliveries for days you will be home and available to bring the package inside
  • Track your packages so you can anticipate when they arrive
  • If you cannot be home for the delivery, have a trusted friend or neighbor collect the package for you
  • Request that the delivery company place your packages in an area that is not visible from the street
  • Invest in a camera system with motion sensors and recording
