HAZLET, NJ — A Hazlet gas station clerk was arrested on Monday and charged with selling tobacco products to someone under the age of 21, according to the Hazlet Police Department.

Officers surveilled the Shell gas station convenience mart on State Highway 36 and Middle Road in order to see if the store clerks were checking customers for ID, after getting a report from a concerned parent that their child had been buying vape products there.

During that time, officers saw several transactions and were able to confirm that the business was selling these products to underage people, police said.

It's not the first time this store has gotten in trouble. Less than a year ago, police found that a different clerk was selling to people underaged.

"Unfortunately, the penalty for this offense has not been a deterrent so far, so we will continue to look for additional ways to take stronger enforcement action," police said in a statement.
