The Holmdel boys varsity team defeated Manasquan tonight with a solid 3-0 victory. Holmdel senior Menos Hiras scored the first goal in the 26th minute and senior Gino D’Agostino added a second goal to give the Hornets a 2-0 halftime lead. Sophomore Brendan Wall added a third goal cementing the victory with just under 3 minutes remaining in the game. Junior Hunter Chapman assisted on two of the goals. This was the second time this season Holmdel was able to overcome Manasquan. The Hornets now improve their record to 5-6 (5-4). The Holmdel defense had a solid performance today. Seniors Eric D’Aleo, Brian Healy, Tom Rogan and Nick Zolofra kept Manasquan to just 5 shots on goal, allowing junior goalkeeper Tyler Marchiano to pick up his third shut out of the year.

The Holmdel boys also defeated Raritan this past Friday by a score of 1-0. Menos Hiras scored the Hornets goal in the 26th minute of the first half. Holmdel took quite a few additional shots but was unable to find the back of the net again.

Next up for the boys is an away game at Rumson-Fair Haven this Thursday at 6 pm. RFH beat the Hornets 3-2 when they met earlier this season. Every game is important to the boys right now as they try to get back to the .500 mark. Teams need to be .500 or better to qualify for Shore Conference Tournament play.

On Friday October 3rd, the girls varsity team beat Raritan 3-0. The Holmdel goals were scored by Hannah Lee, Gabby Bair and Kailey Flynn. This was Bair’s 11th goal of the season, Lee’s 8th and Flynn’s 3rd. Senior goalkeeper Helen Burleigh picked up her 6th shutout of the year. This was the girls 10th win of the year bringing their record to 10-0.

But, Monday October 6th, would be the end of the win streak. The girls traveled to Ocean Township and were unable to walk away with the victory. Junior Casey Matthijs scored her first varsity goal, the lone score for Holmdel, but not enough to overcome the 2 goals scored by Ocean, for the 2-1 final.

Nor were the girls able to get back on track tonight in their game against Manasquan, suffering a 2-0 loss. The girls traveled to the Sea Girt Armory and played on the grass fields there. Manasquan was able to go into the half with a 2-0 lead and Holmdel could not gain the momentum back. The girls are now 10-2 (10-1). This loss to Manasquan was their first divisional loss.

The Holmdel girls have a very important game against Rumson-Fair Haven on Thursday night at Roggy field at 6pm. While Holmdel holds the better overall record, the two teams each have one divisional loss, making this head to head meet a possible battle for first place in the A central division, with few games remaining in regular seasonal play. Holmdel beat Rumson 1-0 in their first game earlier this season.

Both teams need your support at this critical time of the year. So pick a team and come on out and lend your voice to cheering on the Hornets. See you there.
