Holmdel Boys Soccer, Girls Tennis Win Group 2 Championship

Holmdel boys soccer ended their season with a 22-1-1​​​ record, and girls tennis ended their season with an incredible 23-1 record.

HOLMDEL, NJ — At its meeting this Wednesday, Nov. 28, the Holmdel Township Board of Education will recognize the Holmdel High School girls tennis team and boys soccer team and their coaches for capturing the Group 2 crowns in their respective sports.

For the tennis team, this is the fourth consecutive Group 2 championship, as well as the fourth year the team has ended the post-season as runner-up in the statewide Tournament of Champions, in which the champion from each group competes. The team ended their season with with an incredible 23-1 record. They are coached by Chuck Chelednik. Don Russell serves as Assistant Coach.

The Boys Soccer Team ended their season with a 22-1-1 record. This is the Hornets’ second state title having won the Group 3 title in 2010 before moving to Group 2 in 2011. Since then, the team has been Group 2 runner-up three times (2011, 2012 and 2015). John Nacarlo is the head coach. He is assisted by Ron Poll and William Rohr.

“Our Fall athletes competed hard over the course of this season with five of our eight teams posting winning records and competing in post-season competition,” said Holmdel's supervisor of Athletics Shane Fallon. “In addition to our tennis and soccer champions, both our Girls (4-2) and Boys (6-0) Cross Country teams had fantastic seasons with great post season results and our Football team (6-4) qualified for post-season play for the first time since 2007."

“It was an incredibly exciting season for our student-athletes, coaches and fans,” said Holmdel Superintendent Dr. Robert McGarry. “I am proud of all of our teams, both those at Satz and those representing Holmdel High School. Together, they have elevated school spirit and given the whole community another great source of town pride.”
