The Holmdel girls varsity soccer team is off to its best start in years. The girls are now a perfect 8-0 on the season. In the first half, SJV got on the scoreboard first with a goal by Shayna McCarthy in the 9th minute. Holmdel was unable to counter and the game went into halftime with the Lancers leading 1-0. But, the Hornets were not giving up that easily. In the first three minutes of the second half, Gabby Bair scored her 8th goal of the year, off a pass from freshman Abbey Flynn, as she ushered the ball into the net past the SJV keeper, Shaine Sauter, who was playing far off her line, for the equalizer. Not 5 minutes later, junior Rebecca Stanziale scored what would be the winning goal, her second goal of the year, on another assist from Flynn, and any momentum the Saint John Vianney girls may have started to put together in the first half, was now firmly quashed. Bair scored the team’s third goal, on an assist from Hannah Lee, and finally, Catherine Cirigliano buried the last goal, a pass from Hannah Lee, for the big 4-1 victory. It was a nice team effort for Holmdel. Hannah Lee credits the team’s success to the hard work of her teammates. Hannah says “ everyone just goes out and works hard all of the time and just gives 100 percent effort all of the time”. That hard work is apparent and is really paying off for Hannah and her teammates as they enjoy their 8-0 (6-0) record tonight.
The Holmdel girls next take on Matawan on Wednesday night at Matawan High School at 6:00 p.m. Please come over and help cheer the girls on as they look to keep this special season going.

The day was not as happy for the Holmdel boys varsity team as they struggled against the Saint John Vianney boys team this afternoon. SJV scored their first goal early in the first half and added three more goals in the second half. The Lancers dominated the game both in time of possession and shots on goal.
The Holmdel boys next play Matawan at home on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m on Roggy field. Please come out and join me support our players. It wouldn’t hurt to bring a little luck along too. I will see you there.
