Holmdel High Team Wins In Monmouth County Chemistry Competition

Holmdel won two of the top three prizes; Jason Zheng and Alice Huang will advance to the next round. The final competition is July in Paris.

HOLMDEL, NJ — Congratulations are in order to the 15 Advanced Placement Chemistry students at Holmdel High School who participated in the challenging 2019 Open Exam of the Chemistry Olympiad, held last Wednesday, March 13 at Brookdale Community College.

Holmdel won two out of the three top awards, with special congratulations to Jason Zheng and Alice Huang who won second and third place respectively in the county. They will proceed to the next level of competitions.

The contest, open to all Monmouth County high schools, is the first step in choosing the students who will represent the United States in the International Chemistry Olympiad to be held in Paris, France this July.

The Monmouth County competition is part of the U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad (USNCO) program. The purpose of the competition is to stimulate young people to achieve excellence in chemistry. The American Chemical Society has sponsored the program since 1984.

Holmdel High offers AP chemistry and AP Intro to organic chemistry. Holmdel students often pursue other studies in Chemistry as part of the school’s highly regarded Honors Advanced Research program.
