Holmdel Pays $80K to Woman Who Wanted to Be a Cop

Stephanie Geisel alleged she was not hired because of her gender, and that Holmdel has fewer female police officers than surrounding towns.

Holmdel, NJ - Holmdel Township agreed to pay $80,000 to a woman who says she was not hired as a police officer there because of her gender, according to the Asbury Park Press.

Stephanie Geisel, a Holmdel resident, applied for a job with the Holmdel PD in 2013, but said two men were hired over her — even though she scored hired on the civil service exam and had more police experience, she said.

She’s worked as a dispatcher and a special police officer (not allowed to carry a gun) in Sea Bright, Highlands, Keyport and Freehold, according to the APP.

At the time of her lawsuit, Holmdel Township employed fewer female officers than surrounding towns, Geisel alleged. There was only one female Holmdel police officer at the time, who was about to take maternity leave.

The settlement was reached in May but just reported Wednesday. Stock image.
