Horseshoes is the first in a trilogy of one act plays written over the past year by Holmdel, New Jersey, resident Mike Sockol. Set against the backdrop of a family horseshoe tournament in Cape Cod, the play tackles difficult issues, such as death, dementia and infidelity, with both realism and humor. Sockol will direct the play, which will be produced in cooperation with Fearless Production of Rahway, New Jersey.

Sockol has recruited an all-star cast of veteran New Jersey performers, including Mike Burdick (Linden), Matthew Gochman (Jersey City), Joe Lacerda (South Plainfield), Debra Lynch (Wyckoff), Dawn Morvillo (Glen Ridge), and Howard Smith (Oceanport).

“It would be more accurate to call the cast members ‘artistic collaborators’ than just actors. The fun part of an original play is that they get to bring to life characters that have never been seen before. The chemistry has been amazing to watch,” added Sockol.

Sockol, who has been a journalist and a communications specialist for over 30 years, says he had never seriously considered doing any creative writing until challenged by a friend last year.

“He told me that I should consider writing a play for a NJ festival he was helping to organize,” said Sockol. “At first, I thought he was crazy, but the more I considered it, I thought I would give it a try.”

After completing two short plays that that were accepted into the 2015 Kicking and Swearing Festival, organized by Fearless Productions, Sockol decided to write a full length work, using as an inspiration his family’s annual horseshoe tournament on Cape Cod. His follow-up works, Bris and Triangles, are pre-sequels that flesh out roughly a half century of the family’s history.

The Union County Performing Arts Center is located at 1601 Irving Street, Rahway, New Jersey.
