HOLMDEL, NJ — Thanks to everyone who volunteered, Holmdel Township removed an incredible 3,180 pounds of litter from the town's streets, parks, schools and waterways on the town's Cleanup Day, held last Saturday, March 23. That's 1.5 tons of garbage!

Approximately 200 volunteers were assigned to 21 different locations around Holmdel. A rusted engine block removed from Phillips Park and a grimy tire retrieved from a creek near Bailey Lane were just some of the unusual items that volunteers collected.

“A healthy environment is the foundation of our community,” said Holmdel Mayor Eric Hinds. “We owe so much to the natural beauty of our municipality, and I’m so proud to live in a place where so many friends, family members and neighbors are willing to work together to preserve these gifts.”

Volunteers met members of the Recreation Department, Police Department, Department of Public Works (DPW) and Township Committee at the Senior/Community Center on Saturday morning, where they received free t-shirts, recyclable tote bags, community service hour sheets and a cleanup location at one of the following sites.

“When you put on events like this, you never know what the turnout will be," said Rec director Bob Ward. "But we had volunteers coming in waves throughout the morning and afternoon. It speaks to the passion this community has to take ownership in its environmental health. I can’t thank enough the volunteers who joined us."
