Holmdel Update: Car Backfiring Led To Call To Police

A resident's report of hearing gun shots fired from a car was actually a car backfiring, a police investigation has determined Thursday.

HOLMDEL, N.J.— Police who investigated a resident's report Wednesday of shots fired from a car near North Beers Street say they have determined it was a backfiring car.

"Based on surveillance footage in the area, it is believed that the incident was a car backfiring. Thank you to all residents who contacted us with surveillance footage," the police department said in an update on its Facebook site on Thursday morning.

On Wednesday, June 8, at about 1 p.m., the department received one call reporting that someone fired several gunshots into the air from a moving car in the area of North Beers Street, police said in a news release on Facebook.

Officers interviewed numerous people in the area and received conflicting accounts. Some people reported hearing only one loud bang, some heard numerous loud noises, and another said a motorcycle entering North Beers Street from a parking lot was backfiring, police said in the news release Wednesday.
