HOLMDEL TOWNSHIP, N.J. —Laurel Avenue will reopen to traffic on Sunday, May 22, after an accident in March damaged a railroad bridge over the road, causing the closure, township officials said.

This emergency repair project was the result of an accident when a cement truck crashed into the bridge. During that time, drivers were redirected to a detour through Middletown. The road was affected from Holland Road to Route 35, said Deputy Clerk Brian O'Malley.

NJ Transit notified the Township that work has been completed and the road will be open to vehicular traffic in both directions.

“We look forward to our residents and visitors having access to Laurel Avenue once again,” said Holmdel Mayor Greg Buontempo. “This will ease traffic in surrounding neighborhoods and enable drivers to reach Route 35 more efficiently.”

Monmouth County Engineering Department is coordinating with NJ Transit on a multi-phase signage project to hopefully avoid future collisions at this location, while also reducing road closures and traffic delays on Laurel Avenue, O'Malley said in the press statement.
