HOLMDEL, NJ - A man passed out from a narcotics overdose while driving Friday night on Highway 34 in Holmdel, drove into a utility pole and police had to use Narcan to revive him, Holmdel police said. At 11:08 p.m. Friday, the Holmdel police department responded to State Highway 34 near the intersection of Deer Path on the report of a motor vehicle accident. It was reported that a vehicle had struck a utility pole and the operator was unconscious.
Upon arrival, patrol units located the unconscious male operator in a black Toyota sedan that sustained heavy front end damage as a result of the collision with the utility pole. It appeared the driver had suffered a drug overdose while traveling southbound on Highway 34. With assistance from the Holmdel First Aid Squad and MONOC Paramedics, the operator was administered Narcan, a drug used to counteract the effects of a suspected opiate overdose. The operator, a 30 year-old Tinton Falls resident, was further treated by medical personnel and had regained consciousness while still on scene. He was transported to Bayshore Community Hospital for further treatment. The Holmdel Fire Department also assisted on scene.
The crash investigation revealed the Toyota sedan was traveling southbound on State Highway 34. As the operator lost control due to the drug overdose, the vehicle crossed over the center lane markings, into the northbound lane and continued traveling several hundred feet off the roadway before striking the utility pole.
