Monmouth County Closes 2 Popular Sledding Hills Due To COVID-19

The scenic snow day destinations will be prohibited to use due to statewide limits on outdoor gatherings.

HOLMDEL, NJ - If you’re donning a parka and racing to Holmdel Park for some outdoor winter fun, look elsewhere: the popular Holmdel Park sled hill is closed until further notice.

The closure comes amid new statewide limits on the size of outdoor gatherings, which have been reduced to 25 since Dec. 7.

“Due to current limits on the size of outdoor gatherings, the Holmdel Park sled hill will not open through at least the end of December,” the Monmouth County Park System said in a statement Wednesday. “The sled hill status will be revisited as the extent of the restrictions change.”

Wolf Hill park’s sled hill in Oceanport will not be open either, the parks department confirmed.

The Wednesday afternoon announcement wasn’t taken well by all Monmouth County residents, with some calling the decision “absurd” and “disgraceful”:

"So disappointing for the children,” one commenter wrote.

"This is ridiculous,” another wrote.

The Thompson Park ski hut, located in Lincroft, remains open, according to the department.

“We know that some visitors will be disappointed but both Park System sled hills are closed because they attract large crowds which is not in keeping with the Governor’s Covid-19 restrictions,” a representative from the parks department told Patch in an email.
