New Concerns for Union Beach Flooding as Snow Melts

There was 'significant' flooding in Union Beach Saturday; waterfront being checked every 15 minutes Monday, police say.

Union Beach, NJ - This tiny borough on Raritan Bay experienced ”significant flooding” Saturday during the storm. Now, police say they are aware melting snow could push Raritan Bay up higher than normal, which the National Weather Service is warning coastal towns of Monday.

“We are aware of that; we have officers on patrol, checking the waterfront every 15 minutes,” said Captain Michael Woodrow with Union Beach police.

High tide will be at 8:54 p.m. Monday for Union Beach.

Flooding was significant over the weekend, but nowhere near Superstorm Sandy levels, he said, and nowhere near as bad as South Jersey towns like Stone Harbor, Avalon and Sea Isle City experienced.

“We were fortunate this time,” he said.

He said it’s too early to tell the extent of property damage. Keansburg Deputy Police Chief John White said the town received very little flooding over the weekend. Aberdeen flooded along Amboy Avenue, Lakeshore Drive and Greenwood Avenue, but not enough to cause serious damage, police there said.

Flooding was in the usual spots in Union Beach: Many of the numbered streets facing Raritan Bay, Florence Avenue and Union Avenue flooded in particular, he said. The police issued a voluntary evacuation of the town Saturday late afternoon, and some residents did call 911, asking for help getting out, he said, as it was dangerous and difficult to drive in the blinding snow.
