Police Youth Academy Taking Applications In Holmdel

May 16 is the last day to sign up for a program that gives kids hand-on experience about policing.

HOLMDEL, N.J. —The Holmdel Township Police Department is accepting applications for the Police Youth Academy through May 16. There are no exceptions to the deadline, the department said.

The academy will run from Aug. 1 to Aug. 5 for children ages 9 and 10 and from Aug. 8 to Aug. 12 for for children ages 11 and 12.

The goal of the academy is to familiarize children with the role of police, and have hands-on experience in enforcement techniques and training.

Each day will be dedicated to a different topic, such as military etiquette; drill and ceremony; police K9 interaction; basic criminal investigation; self-defense and first aid and fire and water safety.

The cost is $145 per student, which will include lunch each day, shirts, hats and necessary materials. Children are required to wear khaki shorts or slacks and sneakers.

All instruction, demonstrations and presentations will be administered and supervised by township personnel.
