HAZLET, NJ - One student from Raritan High School has tested positive for COVID-19, principal Andrew R. Piotrowski, Ed.D. confirmed in a letter to district parents on Tuesday.

The student-athlete was recently exposed to the virus at an off-campus event. The activity was not affiliated with Raritan High School or the district athletic program, the principal said.

Additional students who were exposed at the same event were also placed under quarantine, according to Piotrowski.

“Yesterday, we were alerted that the student, who is a member of a high school athletic team, was exposed during an off-campus event,” wrote Piotrowski. “The student has been instructed to remain under quarantine and placed on virtual instruction.”

It was not immediately clear how many students were placed under quarantine at the high school.

Officials from the Department of Health and the New Jersey State epidemiologist were also contacted, according to the letter: “The District is coordinating closely with public health officials and following CDC, state, and local health department guidance in order to assure the health and safety of our community,” Piotrowski wrote.

The school has since cleaned and disinfected “all exposed areas” and is cleaning frequently touched surfaces daily. “The status of this situation is fluid, and we are monitoring it closely,” Piotrowski added.

The high school principal concluded his letter by reminding district families to stay vigilant and observe the following safeguards:

  • Stay home when you are sick
  • Wash hands often with soap for at least 20 seconds
  • Cover coughs and sneezes and properly disposing of tissues
  • Limit close contact with people who are sick and not sharing food, drinks and utensils
  • Practice social distancing (staying at least 6 feet apart)
  • Wear a face covering while in school
  • Continue to monitor your health for symptoms

Those with any questions about this situation are asked to contact school nurse Susan Marinelli at (732) 264-8411 ext. 1018.
