Teen Punched In Face In Holmdel Road Rage Incident

HOLMDEL, NJ — A minor fender bender turned into a road rage incident this past Sunday in Holmdel, where a 40-year-old Belford man was ultimately charged with punching a 17-year-old teenager in the face.

William Hyer, 40, of Belford, was arrested Holmdel police announced Monday.

The alleged assault happened at 12:58 p.m. Sunday on the side of Highway 34 near Casola Farms, Holmdel police reported. Earlier, the two vehicles had stopped at the light at Holmdel and Roberts roads; the teenage young man had initially used his signal to indicate a left-hand turn onto Holmdel Road from Roberts Road.

The juvenile then instead decided to continue out to Hwy. 34 and proceeded to continue along Roberts Road. The Chevrolet, driven by Hyer, also went straight. According to witnesses, Hyer honked and made an obscene gesture with his hand. The two vehicles came to a stop at Roberts Road and Hwy. 34; Hyer turned onto Hwy. 34 southbound and proceeded at a slow pace at which point the juvenile driver attempted to pass him, police said. Hyer pulled his car in the path of the teen's vehicle and the two cars made contact and pulled into the northbound shoulder of Hwy. 34.

The two parties were trying to exchange information, but things became confrontational when Hyer tried to take pictures of the other vehicle's license plate and damage, police said. The teen tried to block the view of Hyer's camera and walked alongside him, at which point Hyer punched the teen on the left side of his face, police said. The teen called 911 and Hyer left the area before police got there.

The teen was transported to Bayshore Hospital; he was treated and released. Hyer later turned himself in to Holmdel police. He was charged with simple assault pending a court date in Holmdel municipal court.
