Temporary Water Treatment Changes May Affect Holmdel Residents

New Jersey American Water is temporarily changing the water treatment process as part of their annual maintenance program.

MONMOUTH COUNTY, NJ — As part of New Jersey American Water's annual maintenance program, the current water treatment process will be altered at the company’s Swimming River Water Treatment Plant in Colts Neck, according to an official statement.

The treatment process began on Monday, Feb. 14, and will last until April. The temporary maintenance includes changing the water process from a chloramine residual to free chlorine residual.

Due to the change in the process, some Monmouth residents may notice the mild taste and smell of chlorine in their water. The New Jersey American Water clarified that the water will still be safe to drink and will only be temporary until the system maintenance is complete.

In an official statement, New Jersey American Water said, "We will monitor water quality in the system to provide that customers continue to receive water that meets or is better than federal and state drinking water standards."

Residents can place their water in an uncovered glass container in the refrigerator overnight to reduce the taste of chlorine, as this dissipates chlorine faster.
