SUSSEX COUNTY, NJ — Sussex County residents have an opportunity next month to safely dispose of household hazardous waste for free at a one-day drop-off event.
The Sussex County Municipal Utilities Authority will host its Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Day on Saturday, June 6, 2026, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the SCMUA Solid Waste Facility, 34 Route 94 South, Lafayette. The event runs rain or shine and no registration is required.
Up to 100 pounds of dry waste and 10 gallons of liquid waste will be accepted at no charge. Additional quantities are subject to a $1.76-per-pound scale fee. Waste must be in original or labeled containers and placed in the rear cargo area of the vehicle; residents should remain in their cars during drop-off.
Accepted materials include oil-based paints and stains, solvents, brake fluid, sulfuric and muriatic acid, photo chemicals, fluorescent light bulbs, lead-based paint, paint thinner, gasoline, rust remover, ammonia, lighter fluid, insecticides, rechargeable batteries, turpentine, kerosene, pesticides, chlorine, mercury and pool chemicals.

Residents looking to dispose of latex paint at home can mix excess paint with clay-based kitty litter or speedy dry, allow it to dry completely and dispose of it with household trash.
Used motor oil, antifreeze, vehicle batteries, tires, fluorescent light bulbs, propane gas cylinders and latex paint may be dropped off at the SCMUA any Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
