Hopatcong Police Issues Heat Wave Safety Tips For Residents

HOPATCONG, NJ — As high temperatures and humidity continue, the Hopatcong Police Department is reminding residents to take precautions to stay safe during the heat wave.

Officials encourage everyone to stay cool, stay hydrated, and check on family members, neighbors, and others who may be more vulnerable to extreme heat.

Safety tips include:

• Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty.
• Stay indoors in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible.
• Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
• Limit strenuous outdoor activities, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., the hottest part of the day.
• Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle, even for a few minutes.
• Ensure pets have access to fresh water and shade, and avoid walking them on hot pavement, which can burn their paws.

Residents should also be aware of the signs of heat-related illness, including dizziness, nausea, headache, confusion, and excessive sweating or lack of sweating. If someone is showing signs of heat stroke, call 911 immediately.

The department encourages everyone to look out for one another and take extra precautions until the extreme heat subsides.
