Nor'Easter Rips Roof Off Of North Jersey YMCA

SUSSEX COUNTY, NJ — The roof of Sussex County's YMCA was destroyed during this weekend's nor'easter, prompting it to temporarily close.

During the first wave of high winds and heavy rain during this weekend's nor'easter, on Friday night, the roof of the YMCA on Wits End Road in Hardyston was ripped off, according to representatives.

"Following last night's storm, our Sussex County branch sustained significant roof damage," officials said. "A roofing company has already been dispatched, and our team is assessing the full extent of the damage."

"Out of an abundance of caution," the branch remained closed all of Saturday and Sunday as the roofing company and the YMCA team assessed the damaged.

The collapsed metal roof was removed by Sunday morning, and the YMCA was green-lit by officials to resume operations on Monday morning, according to representatives.

The pool area, however, will remain closed as roof repairs continue to be made.

"We know some of you experienced disruption to classes and pool access during this closure," officials said. "Our leadership team is currently assessing the full scope before making decisions on compensation, and we'll share more once we have the complete picture."

This weekend's nor'easter caused extensive damaged and flooding across the Garden State, especially at the Jersey Shore. More than 20,000 people were without power this weekend, as eight New Jersey counties were in a state of emergency.
