HOPEWELL, NJ — The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) has issued a Code Red Air Quality Alert for the Hopewell area as smoke from Canadian wildfires continues to affect air quality across the state.
A Code Red Alert indicates that air pollution levels are unhealthy for some members of the public and can pose more serious health risks to sensitive groups, including people with heart or lung disease, older adults, children and teenagers, people with diabetes, pregnant individuals, and outdoor workers.
The NJDEP advises those in sensitive groups to limit time outdoors, reduce the intensity of outdoor activities, take frequent breaks, and watch for symptoms such as coughing or shortness of breath.
People with asthma should follow their asthma action plan and keep quick-relief medication available. Individuals with heart disease should be alert for symptoms including palpitations, shortness of breath, or unusual fatigue, and contact their health care provider if they experience any of these warning signs.
