Event Details
The Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands, often referred to as the Freedmen’s Bureau, was established on March 3, 1865. At this event, we will transcribe handwritten documents, maintained by the Smithsonian, that provide a window into the lives of formerly enslaved men and women during the Reconstruction Era.
Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop; a limited number are available on site.
Unearthing History, One Page at a Time is a collaborative transcription series where volunteers convert historical documents into searchable digital text, supporting researchers, genealogists, and the preservation of history for future generations.
