The Princeton Folk Music Society presents Kate Taylor in an evening of upbeat and bubbling song filled with enthusiasm and love. Known as “Sister Kate”, her singing has been described as bluesy, warm, and more folky than that of her brothers, James and Livingston Taylor. Peter Asher (of Peter and Gordon) praises Kate’s singing for its “soulful phrasing with an R&B flavor, but a little bit North Carolina as well.”
Kate’s musical career began in the 1970’s when she was “discovered” by Peter Asher, who was then acting as a producer for Apple Records and as brother James’ manager. Asher produced her first record Sister Kate, which was released in 1971. Her life then took a turn away from performing as she focused on other matters, including raising three daughters. In 2021, Kate celebrated the 50th anniversary of Sister Kate with the release of a new album Why Wait, again produced by Peter Asher and with many of the same musicians who appeared on the 1971 album. Kate is now performing regularly, sometimes solo and sometimes with other musicians including Tommy James of “Tommy James and the Shondells.”
