3 Hurt In Wrong-Way Crash In Howell: Police

People from Howell, Ocean Gate and Jackson suffered injuries in the crash, police said.

HOWELL, NJ — Three people were injured Wednesday when a driver going the wrong way on Route 9 hit two other vehicles, Howell police said.

The crash happened shortly before 11 p.m. Wednesday, Howell Sgt. Christian Antunez confirmed.

An 18-year-old from Howell driving a 2003 Hyundai turned onto Route 9 from Bergerville Road, Antunez said, but instead of turning into the northbound lanes, he turned into the southbound lanes and continued north.

A 31-year-old Ocean Gate woman who was southbound on Route 9 swerved in her 2016 Toyota in an attempt to avoid the Hyundai, Antunez said. But the Hyundai sideswiped the Toyota and then hit a 2017 Jeep Renegade that also was southbound, he said.

The driver of the Jeep, a 40-year-old Jackson man, suffered a cut on his hand, Antunez said. The woman had rib pain, he said, and the 18-year-old suffered hip pain; all three were taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune for treatment.
