Bicyclist 'Critical' Following Howell Crash: Police

Police say the bicyclist rode out of a wooded area directly into the path of a Nissan on White Road Tuesday night.

HOWELL, NJ — A bicyclist was listed in critical condition Wednesday following a collision Tuesday night on White Street, Howell police said.

The bicyclist suffered serious, life-threatening injuries and was flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune following the 6 p.m. accident, Howell Detective Sgt. Christian Antunez said. He did not release the bicyclist's age, gender or hometown.

A 2011 Nissan Altima, driven by a 17-year-old, was westbound on White Street when the bicyclist came out of a wooded area on the north side of the road into the path of Nissan, resulting in an immediate collision, he said.

The driver and his 13-year-old passenger were not injured and immediately called 911, Antunez said. No charges have been filed and no tickets issued at this time, he said.

"They are cooperating with the investigation," he said.

The bicyclist was treated at the scene by MONOC paramedics before flown to jersey Shore by MONOC MedEVAC, Antunez said.

White Street was closed between Conover Street and Georgia Tavern Road for several hours while the crash was investigated by the Monmouth County Serious Collision Analysis Response Team.

In addition to MONOC, Howell Police EMS, Howell First Aid and the Freewood Acres Fire Department responded to assist.

The crash remains under investigation by Patrolman Matthew Cherney of the Howell Police Department Traffic Safety Division and Agent Reggie Grant of the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.
