Howell Golfers Look to Keep Playing Above Par With a Season of Low Scores

Rebels have returnees needed to stay in Shore Conference A North hunt.

When it comes to the Howell High School golf team, coach Tim Hogan looks to have another squad that can continue what has been a successful eight-year tenure at the helm of the program.

If the Rebels can continue the success they enjoyed last year with a 13-4 record, Hogan will pass the 100 career win mark. He currently stands at 89-39, showing just how strong the squad has been and this year looks to be no exception.

Adding to the optimism for the year is the fact that the squad brings back all five starters. That includes seniors like four year starter Billy Fitzpatrick, and Jared Eisenberg as well as Brandon Hoffman. Also back this season are juniors Rich Jakubowski and Rebecca Gaona.

With so much talent returning, there is not a lot of room for newcomers, but  Hogan is still hoping three new faces will compliment the members of the team coming back for at least one more year.

Junior Mike Kochenash will have this season and next to contribute to the team's success, while sophomores Rob Don and Josh Friedman will likely play an important role.

As for what he hopes to accomplish this season, Hogan said the Rebels are looking to contend for not only the Shore Conference A North titles, but the Monmouth County and Shore Conference crowns as well.

Two possible stumbling blocks for Howell are Christian Brothers Academy and Freehold Township, according to the coach. However, with a lot of talent and experience on the roster, the Rebels should be a formidable challenge for any team that takes them on this year.

The regular season is scheduled to kick off on Friday with a trip to the Wall Invitational. The Rebels will then have 10 days after that to get ready for their first match against Freehold Township.

The Rebels don't face CBA until May 10.

As far as the tournaments go, the Monmouth County Tournament is April 14, with the conference tournament to be held two weeks later.
