Lakewood Man Killed In Route 9 Accident In Howell: Prosecutor

Isidro Martinez-Mendez, 51, died Sunday evening, authorities said, less than 2 miles south of a fatal pedestrian accident a week earlier.

HOWELL, NJ — A Lakewood Township man has been identified as the pedestrian who died after he was hit by a car Sunday evening on Route 9 in Howell.

Isidro Martinez-Mendez, 51, was crossing Route 9 northbound about a quarter-mile south of Alexander Avenue about 7:45 p.m. Sunday when he was hit, Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni said Monday.

Martinez-Mendez was hit by a 2016 Honda Accord driven by Christina Martinez, 22, of Jackson, Gramiccioni said. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:56 p.m., he said.

Neither Christina Martinez nor her 10-year-old passenger were injured, he said.

The crash happened less than 2 miles south of one that took the life of Juan Santiago Lopez, 53, of Freehold, eight days earlier. Santiago Lopez was hit as he crossed the southbound lanes of Route 9 at the intersection of New Friendship Road at 12:36 a.m. Dec. 2, Gramiccioni said. The driver in that incident, Juanean Perez, 21, of Jackson Township, has been charged with driving while intoxicated, he said.

Sunday night's crash remains under investigation by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, Monmouth County Serious Collision Analysis Response Team (SCART), and the Howell Police Department.
