Pedestrian 'Critical' After Being Hit On Route 9 In Howell: PD
The man was crossing the highway but not near a crosswalk, police said.

HOWELL, NJ — A Lakewood man remains in critical condition after he was hit by a car while crossing Route 9 Tuesday evening, Howell police said Wednesday.
Maximino Sandoval-Castillo, 73, of Lakewood, is at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where he is listed in critical condition with a serious head injury, Howell Detective Sgt. John Lopez said.
Sandoval-Castillo was walking across the road near Lanes Mill Road about 5:45 p.m., and there were no crosswalks immediately nearby, Lopez said. As he walked across, he was hit by a gray 2003 Toyota Camry driven by Charles Gachie, 42, of South Brunswick, who was northbound on Route 9 at the time.

Sandoval-Castillo was taken to the hospital by Howell First Aid. Gachie, who was unhurt, remained at the scene, Lopez said.
Route 9 north was closed for several hours with assistance from the state Department of Transportation while the scene was investigated by Howell Police, the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office Fatal Accident Investigation Unit and the Monmouth County Serious Crash Analysis Response Team (SCART), Lopez said.

No summonses have been issued and the crash remains under investigation at this time.
