Who Shot Howell Cat With An Arrow, Prosecutor Asks

Authorities believe a crossbow was used to shoot the cat in the face; the animal is recovering.

HOWELL, NJ — Authorities are seeking the public's help in finding the person who shot a neighborhood cat with an arrow in Howell on Thursday, the Monmouth County prosecutor's office said Friday.

The cat was discovered shot Monday evening when Howell's animal control officer responded to a call about an injured animal about 6:15 p.m. on the 600 block of Casino Drive, Prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni said.

The cat was shot in the face, according to the Monmouth County SPCA, where he has been named "Kitty Luck." He was immediately taken to Red Bank Veterinary Hospital for treatment and is "recovering nicely" at the shelter following surgery to remove the arrow, the prosecutor's office said. The Monmouth shelter is seeking donations to help cover the cost of the care. (See below.)

Authorities believe the cat is a community cat that had been taken care of fairly well before the incident, and that the weapon used was a small handheld cross bow. Investigators with the SPCA division of the Monmouth County prosecutor's office and the Howell police department are continuing to investigate.

Anyone who has any information, who may have witnessed the incident or if you may know a person in the area with that type of weapon is asked to call the MCPO Animal Cruelty Hotline at 877-898-7297 or call the Howell Municipal Humane Law Enforcement at 732-922-0100.
