MORRIS COUNTY, NJ — A man is dead following a traffic stop on a Morris County highway this week, according to officials.
On Wednesday, around 3 a.m., a Hardyston police officer tried to pull over a vehicle on Route 23. The traffic stop ended in Jefferson Township, officials added.
The driver of the vehicle, a 49-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to authorities.
No information on how he died or why he was being pulled over was given by the Morris County Prosecutor's Office.
That same morning, both the northbound and southbound lanes of Route 23 were shut down due to an incident involving a car just south of County Route 515 in Jefferson, according to the Hardyston Police Department. Officials haven't specified if the road closure and the man's death are related.
Officials did say that the incident was not criminal and that there is no known threat to the public.
The incident remains under investigation by the Morris County Prosecutor's Office.
